FAQ
Was Sie schon immer über Sandskulpturen wissen wollten ...
Yes, the sculptures are made exclusively out of sand and water.
We use what is known as “unwashed” sand.
The fine particles in unwashed sand (calcium carbonate, silt, etc.) are a natural “adhesive”, holding the sand together for us, in combination with moistening and tamping.
Indoors, the sculptures last for years (record so far: five years), outdoors, of course, it always depends on the weather, but on average over six weeks, as often seen on the North Sea and Baltic coasts.
We work with a form in which the sand is highly compacted; outside we even use vibrating tampers. This formwork is removed again prior to carving, of course.
The record height for the “tallest sandcastle in the world”, set by us, is 16.68 m (Guinness Book of Records)!
While sand is a fabulous building material, it cannot be used for everything. Building at an angle of 90°, or making cut-throughs are difficult, as are the overhangs known as “undercuts”. After all, this is sand, not concrete.
No, the fine particles we mentioned above make the sand very hard once it has dried out.
No, it is not a job with formal training. Either it’s the thing for you, or not. What you need above all is spatial visualisation ability and patience, patience, patience …
Yes, we are professional sand carvers and make our living from it. There are around 500 professional working sand carvers worldwide, most of them with over ten years experience. And we don’t just work in Europe, but worldwide.
We go inside!
The sculptures are more resilient than you might think. Normal rain doesn’t damage them. Very heavy rain or even hailstones can sometimes cause a little pitting to the surface, but that can generally be sorted out fairly easily.
Then we mix up some real “mud” and try to repair the damage. But unfortunately that is not always successful.
An absolutely harmless, environment-friendly solution that weatherproofs the finished surface to protect it from rain and wind.
