World Sand Sculpting Championships
Eight teams, each comprised of two artists, battled it out for the title “World Sand Sculpting Champion ". They each had 40 tonnes of sand and a week’s time to create their interpretation of the theme "International fairy tales and legends“. Twelve nations were represented: The Netherlands, Ireland, Finland, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Brazil, USA and Canada.
A gigantic, over eight-meter high fantasy castle made of 600 tonnes of sand towered over the scene. At the foot of the castle lay the spectacular eye-catcher: a dragon, breathing real smoke!
Over its eight-week run, this event attracted approx. 300,000 visitors and met with a worldwide media response.
